There is an amazing collection of photos of New York tenement buildings at the Tenement Museum archive, here. The Museum itself looks fascinating, a tenement building in orignial condition at 97 Orchard Street. Built on Manhattan's Lower East Side in 1863, it was home to nearly 7000 working class immigrants.
